The game came with 42 songs on the disc and 200 songs in the GHTV collection new content is released to GHTV every week via premium shows that give players unique incentives. GHTV allows users to pick up and play currently-streamed music at any time or to pay money and in-game credits to play any song in the library instead of relying on traditional downloadable material. Songs on GHTV are delivered with the note track on top of their music video or live concert footage. FreeStyleGames also wanted to avoid the traditional downloadable content model when it came to adding new songs to the game, so they developed the GHTV mode, which includes curated playlists in the style of music television channels that are streamed around the clock, allowing them to acquire and add new songs easily. Activision gave FreeStyleGames complete reign to rejuvenate the franchise, which resulted in the development of a new guitar controller with a 6-button, 3-fret configuration, as opposed to the 5-button controller of prior games.įreeStyleGames also wanted to give the player a more immersive experience, so they designed the main career mode GH Live to display the note pattern atop full-motion video taken from the perspective of a lead guitarist during a concert, with the crowd and other band members dynamically reacting to the player’s performance. Activision wanted to bring back Guitar Hero for the next generation of video game systems, but the new game had to be unique. The game is a relaunch of the Guitar Hero franchise, and it is the first new entry in the series since Warriors of Rock in 2010 and the eighth overall. The purpose of this game, like with previous ones in the series, is to utilize a special guitar controller to match fret patterns presented on-screen, scrolling note patterns in time with the music. The first thing you’ll notice about Guitar Hero Live is that the controller itself has been reworked. We anticipate getting hands-on time with the Wii U version of Guitar Hero Live and hey, maybe we’ll be surprised by some nice GamePad features.Guitar Hero Live is a music video game produced by Activision and created by FreeStyleGames. MSRP: 99.99 (Game + guitar), 149.99 (Game + two guitars) Released: October 23, 2015. So while you won’t be able to use your old controllers or DLC in the new Guitar Hero, you can rest easy knowing that, if you want to play it on Wii U, you’re likely to get an optimal experience. Guitar Hero TV is basically the new game’s version of DLC and online play, as it lets you play songs on stations that seem to be similar to services such as Pandora. Unlike the Wii, which required Vicarious Visions to pull a rabbit out of a hat to get DLC to work, the Wii U has competent online functionality, so the online experience in the streaming music service Guitar Hero TV should, in theory, work fine on Wii U. That might not affect the end product of Guitar Hero Live, especially since the scope is to make it playable on essentially every damn thing possible, but that mostly guarantees that the Wii U version should hold up to the other versions. This patch features new, unofficial GHTV private servers, created to preserve the GHTV song library and to continue the GHTV experience after the official servers were shut down. The team has a pedigree, and that pedigree has hands-on Nintendo experience. GHTV Reloaded (or GHTVR for short) is a community-made patch and private server for Guitar Hero Live. Going back further, Freestyle Games made both of the DJ Hero games, which were both fantastic. Sing Party was a well-developed game that made use of the Wii U’s features it just was a rote karaoke game with a limited song catalog on a system that floundered right out of the gate. However, the fundamental aspects of the karaoke game were sound. That game, Sing Party, had all the appearances of a serious flop after launch, as all plans for DLC and expansion vanished almost instantly. If you don’t remember, FreeStyle Games actually created a Wii U launch game directly with Nintendo. In addition to the PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U versions, the new Guitar Hero will also be available in fully featured playable-on-your-TV form for select mobile devices. At this early stage, we don’t know what kind of additions or subtractions will be going with the Wii U version, but considering developer FreeStyle Games’ experience as a Wii U developer and the way Guitar Hero Live is being presented, the Wii U version should be just as full featured as the other versions on home consoles and even mobile. With no Rock Band 4 on the way, Guitar Hero Live is the only rhythm game heading to Nintendo’s system this fall. If you have any interest in the budding music game renaissance going on in 2015 with Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live, you only have one option on Wii U.
